All UK Mobile Networks
Since the Vodafone-Three merger in June 2025, the UK has three main network operators. Here they are — fully explained, independently.
One of the UK's original two mobile networks — launched as Cellnet on 1 January 1985. Now part of Virgin Media O2 (Telefónica + Liberty Global joint venture). Won Uswitch Best Coverage 2026. First European operator to launch satellite-to-smartphone connectivity in February 2026 via SpaceX Starlink — boosting UK landmass coverage to 95%.
Formed from the Orange and T-Mobile merger in 2010. Launched the UK's first 4G network in October 2012, and its first 5G in May 2019. Owned by BT Group since 2016. Rated the UK's #1 network by every major independent study in 2026 — winning umlaut Best in Test for the 11th consecutive year with a record-breaking 920/1000 score. 5G+ Standalone covers more than 50 million people.
Created from the merger of Vodafone UK and Three UK on 31 May 2025 — now the UK's largest mobile network by customer count with 28.8 million subscribers. Backed by an £11 billion 10-year investment commitment. Three brand offers Go Roam in 160+ countries. Vodafone brand serves business customers and 83-country international roamers. Fastest average 5G speeds in the UK before April 2026 speed caps.
Tesco Mobile is the UK's largest MVNO with 5 million+ customers, running on O2's network. 5 consecutive Uswitch Best Customer Service awards (2022–2026) and ranked 8th overall in the UK Customer Satisfaction Index — the only telecoms provider in the top 50. Unique Clubcard integration with frozen prices. Also: Giffgaff, Sky Mobile (O2), SMARTY, iD Mobile (Three), Lebara, Lycamobile.
New — 26 February 2026
On 26 February 2026, O2 became the first European mobile operator to launch direct-to-device satellite connectivity, powered by SpaceX Starlink Direct to Cell. Working in O2's licensed 1800 MHz spectrum, Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit now extend O2's UK landmass coverage from 89% to 95% — reaching mountains, coastlines, and rural areas that no terrestrial mast has ever covered. No extra hardware. Just a £3/month bolt-on. Works on Samsung Galaxy S25 series at launch, with more devices to follow.
Understanding UK Mobile Plans
SIM Only, Pay Monthly, PAYG, eSIM, 5G, Roaming — each explained clearly and independently.
Data, calls and texts — no handset included. You use your existing phone. The best-value option for anyone whose phone is under three years old. Much cheaper than a phone contract for the same data allowance.
A new handset bundled with your monthly airtime plan. The phone's retail cost is divided across 24 or 36 months. Convenient if you want a new phone without a large upfront payment — but total cost is typically higher than buying outright plus SIM Only.
No contract. No commitment. Top up credit when you need it, then pay for usage as it happens. Most modern PAYG works via 30-day bundles — a fixed top-up gives a monthly data and calls allowance, renewing when you top up again.
A digital SIM card permanently built into your device's hardware — no physical card to insert or swap. Activate instantly online by scanning a QR code or using an app. Supports dual SIM on most modern devices (one eSIM + one physical SIM simultaneously).
Fifth-generation mobile — 3–10× faster than 4G with lower latency and more capacity in busy areas. EE's 5G+ Standalone covers 50 million+ people. Available in 500+ UK towns and cities. Included free on virtually all UK mobile plans — no premium tier needed.
Use your UK number and data abroad. Post-Brexit, the picture varies dramatically by network. O2 includes 49 EU destinations free on all plans and 75 countries on Plus/Ultimate plans. Three Go Roam covers 160+ countries. EE charges by day on entry plans. Tesco Mobile offers 48 destinations free.
EE — Best in Test 2026
EE has now won the umlaut connect UK Mobile Network Test for 11 consecutive years — scoring 920/1,000 in 2026, the highest score ever recorded in the test's UK history. That is 112 points ahead of the second-placed Vodafone (808). EE leads every category: voice quality, data speed, network reliability, and crowdsourced coverage. 5G+ Standalone now reaches 50 million people across 610+ UK towns and cities.
