New — 26 February 2026

O2 Satellite.
Europe's first direct-to-phone satellite service.

On 26 February 2026, O2 became the first European mobile operator to launch direct-to-device satellite connectivity, powered by SpaceX Starlink Direct to Cell. Working in O2's licensed 1800 MHz spectrum, Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit now extend O2's UK landmass coverage from 89% to 95% — reaching mountains, coastlines, and rural areas that no terrestrial mast has ever covered. No extra hardware. Just a £3/month bolt-on. Works on Samsung Galaxy S25 series at launch, with more devices to follow.

Understanding UK Mobile Plans

Six Ways to Buy UK Mobile Service

SIM Only, Pay Monthly, PAYG, eSIM, 5G, Roaming — each explained clearly and independently.

📱

SIM Only

Data, calls and texts — no handset included. You use your existing phone. The best-value option for anyone whose phone is under three years old. Much cheaper than a phone contract for the same data allowance.

  • 30-day rolling or 12-month contracts
  • Lowest monthly price for any data allowance
  • 5G included free on compatible devices
  • Switch networks easily with a PAC code
  • No credit check needed on rolling plans
📦

Pay Monthly

A new handset bundled with your monthly airtime plan. The phone's retail cost is divided across 24 or 36 months. Convenient if you want a new phone without a large upfront payment — but total cost is typically higher than buying outright plus SIM Only.

  • Brand new flagship or mid-range smartphone
  • 24 or 36-month contract terms
  • Phone cost separated from airtime cost (O2 Refresh model)
  • Credit check required
  • Switch to SIM Only when contract ends to save £10–20/month
💳

Pay As You Go

No contract. No commitment. Top up credit when you need it, then pay for usage as it happens. Most modern PAYG works via 30-day bundles — a fixed top-up gives a monthly data and calls allowance, renewing when you top up again.

  • No minimum contract, no direct debit
  • No credit check required
  • Top up online, in-app, or at any shop
  • O2 PAYG includes free EU roaming up to 25GB
  • Ideal for children, elderly users, or light users
🔷

eSIM

A digital SIM card permanently built into your device's hardware — no physical card to insert or swap. Activate instantly online by scanning a QR code or using an app. Supports dual SIM on most modern devices (one eSIM + one physical SIM simultaneously).

  • iPhone XS and later (all iPhone 12–16 models)
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 and later
  • Google Pixel 3 and later
  • Instant activation — no waiting for a card
  • All major UK networks now support eSIM
📡

5G Coverage

Fifth-generation mobile — 3–10× faster than 4G with lower latency and more capacity in busy areas. EE's 5G+ Standalone covers 50 million+ people. Available in 500+ UK towns and cities. Included free on virtually all UK mobile plans — no premium tier needed.

  • EE peak speed: 730+ Mbps (RootMetrics 2025)
  • EE 5G availability: 77.4% of time (Opensignal 2026)
  • Three average 5G: 187 Mbps (before April 2026 caps)
  • 5G Standalone (5G+): EE covers 50M+ people
  • iPhone 12+, Samsung S21+, Pixel 5+ compatible

Quick Answers

Common Questions.

The most asked questions about UK mobile — answered plainly and independently.

All FAQs ›
Which UK network has the best coverage in 2026?
+
All three UK MNOs (EE, O2, VodafoneThree) claim 99%+ 4G population coverage. EE is independently rated best overall — winning umlaut Best in Test 2026 with a record 920/1000, and recording 77.4% 5G availability in Opensignal's January 2026 study. O2 won Uswitch Best Coverage 2026 and has now extended UK landmass coverage to 95% via its Starlink satellite service. VodafoneThree's combined network is the largest by customers (28.8 million). Always check each network's coverage checker for your specific postcode before choosing.
How do I keep my phone number when switching networks?
+
Text PAC to 65075 from the number you want to keep. You receive a free 9-character PAC code within 60 seconds. This code is valid for 30 days. Give it to your new network when you sign up — your number transfers within one working day, and your old contract is automatically cancelled. The process is free, cannot be refused, and is governed by Ofcom. If you just want to leave without porting your number, text STAC to 75075 instead.
Is Three's unlimited data really speed-capped from 2026?
+
Yes — from 19 April 2026, all new Three Pay Monthly and Mobile Broadband contracts include an "Everyday Speed" cap of up to 100 Mbps download. New PAYG customers are limited to 25 Mbps (50 Mbps with an Auto-Renew Data Pack). A Full Speed Add-on at £4/month removes the cap entirely. Existing customers who are within their minimum term are not affected by the cap until they re-contract or upgrade. EE and O2 unlimited plans have no speed cap on their UK networks.
Do I get free EU roaming in 2026?
+
It depends on your network and plan tier. O2 includes free EU roaming in 49 European destinations on all standard plans (25GB data fair use monthly) — and is the only major MNO not to reintroduce any EU roaming charges after Brexit. Three Complete plans include Go Roam in 160+ worldwide destinations. EE All Rounder and Full Works plans include free EU roaming; Essentials customers pay £2.29/day. Tesco Mobile offers 48 destinations free via Home From Home. Vodafone standard plans charge by zone per day. Always check your specific plan's roaming terms before travelling.
What happened with the Vodafone and Three merger?
+
Vodafone UK and Three UK merged on 31 May 2025 to create VodafoneThree — the UK's largest mobile network by customer count (28.8 million). The deal was approved by the CMA in December 2024 on condition of a binding £11 billion 10-year investment commitment. Both the Vodafone and Three brands continue to operate separately. On 14 May 2026, Vodafone Group announced it would buy out CK Hutchison's 49% stake for £4.3 billion, pending regulatory approval, making VodafoneThree wholly Vodafone-owned.
